The Reason You Work
Why do you work so hard to get money?
Take a minute and answer that for yourself.I'll bet that your reason would fall very nicely into these categories:
- to take care of yourself
- to take care of the people and things that are important
- to enjoy life as you see fit
This is important to make clear to yourself. The answer is insight into something waaay more important than money: your values.
Earning money is supposed to facilitate connecting you to what you value.
But here's another question: How much time do you spend investing in and enjoying what you value?
Let's Make It Plain
Here's the problem. If I say that the things I truly value are my family, my friends, giving to others, and enriching experiences, then I would expect my life to reflect that.
But is that the case?
Let's say you spend 8 of your best waking hours each day working, plus 1-2 hours getting ready for, and traveling to and from work.
That's 40+ of your best hours each week, when you're most energetic and capable.
And 20+ of your naturally most capable years of my life, working for money,
...looking forward to retirement, when "you can truly focus on what matters most",
...meanwhile pushing all of the things that you value most into the margins of your life,
...after you're drained,
...after you've prioritized work,
...and after you've stressed about how to make work happen no matter what else is happening with what you TRULY value.
Seems backwards to me.
Picture This
What if, instead of solely fixating on accumulating more dollars, you focused directly on acquiring more time?
Shifting the focus to getting time through passive income is more valuable than solely accumulating dollars.
Passive income is like planting seeds that grow into money trees, continuously bearing fruit long after you've planted them. It's income that doesn't demand your constant presence.
Which means your presence can be elsewhere, where YOU deem it necessary.
The idea that you have to work for decades to create time freedom is a lie.
The truth is, there are work journeys that lead to increasing time commitments.
There are journeys that maintain the same time commitment.
And there are journeys that lead to smaller time commitments.
