A Personal Definition for Wealth
Rethinking Wealth
When we think of wealth, the image that often comes to mind is an extravagant amount of money, a figure so large that it’s hard to even comprehend. But what if wealth isn't solely about having more money than you know what to do with? What if it’s not about money at all?
By rethinking what wealth means to you personally, you might discover that attaining it is more feasible than you ever imagined.
The textbook definition of wealth is "an abundance of valuable possessions or money." But let's delve deeper into this concept by examining two fundamental questions:
1. What is abundance?
2. What are valuable possessions?
Understanding Abundance
Abundance is defined as a very large quantity of something, but what constitutes a "large quantity" is entirely relative. For someone who grew up in poverty, an abundance might be $48,000 a year, the median American salary. For someone from an upper-middle-class background, it might take millions to feel the same sense of abundance.
Consider what financial abundance means to you personally.
Is it having a comfortable savings account? Is it being debt-free? Once you have your definition.
Let's explore the next thought.
Identifying Valuable Possessions
Money is an obvious answer, but what else do we truly value?
There are many things beyond financial wealth that we cherish:
- Family
- Health
- Freedom
- New experiences
- A sense of peace
- Spirituality
- Comfort
Recognizing these can shift the perceived value of money to a much lower tier of importance.
With these thoughts in mind, I pose the question to you: "What is wealth?"

My Personal Definition of Wealth
For me, wealth is time freedom—the ability to invest my time in the people and things I value most without worrying about financial repercussions.
Most people can’t imagine having this freedom until retirement at 65 or older, and given traditional tools and lifestyles, that’s usually when it happens.
But wouldn’t it be wonderful to achieve it sooner?
Imagine having the freedom to travel and see the world with your children while they’re still young. Think about investing the energy and resources into your health that you know you need. Picture dedicating your life to meaningful volunteer work without the threat of financial hardship.
Retirement and time freedom are about more than just "finally resting." It’s about finally working in ways that bring the greatest satisfaction.
Achieving True Wealth Sooner
Finding rewarding work in a traditional sense is possible, and to those who have, congratulations—you’ve won!
But for the many who would quit their job the second they won the lottery, who crave more time with their kids, or who feel that life should be more than it currently is, consider this:
Often, the gap between where you are now and where you want to be is financial.
Essential bills need to be paid.
Debts need to be cleared.
And a future needs to be secured.

It is possible, using tools we use every day to learn, have fun, and connect. Getting started is simple, and success requires a commitment to growth.
